The catholic renovation movement reacts with excess to the Reformation. The emotion-loaded baroque metaphorical language shall bring the worshippers back to Catholicism. The in Rome originating dynamics reached in the 17th century the whole Valais, Goms setting the tone. Numerous signs of faith come into being, churches, chapels, calvarias and wayside crosses. Together with a flourishing development of pilgrimages and processions they all show a strong penetration of religion in the rustic life.

 

n the second Thursday after Pentecost the catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Corpus Christi. Highlight of the day is the procession through the whole village. With the ritual gestures, the appearance of dressed up groups and the acoustic accompaniment of bands and choruses the event resembles a theatre play. In the Lötschental the Lord's Grenadiers in their historic costumes give the procession a special image. The Grenadiers' task is to accompany the Blessed Sacrament during the procession through the village. They make a second appearance in the afternoon, joining the parade. The colours-bearer, accompanied by the local music waves the banner of the municipality. How do religious custom and show parade go together? 

According to Konstantin Kalbermatten, Officer of the Blatten's Lord's Grenadiers: “We should keep the religious and the secular issue apart. When we accompany the procession and enter the church we feel as the Blessed Sacrament's protectors. In the afternoon, during the Parade, we are proud to present ourselves to the public and to put on a show.”
