Until the 19th century most of the inhabitants of the World Heritage Region were almost entirely self-sufficient. In the focus of the food production was the bakery house, a community institution of the villagers.
In Birgisch you can admire a beautiful bakery house which was restored in 1995/96 by the municipality.
