A large block of marble near the Hotel Schwarzwaldalp recalls that marble was once quarried in this area. The carbonate rocks occurs locally as thin layers in the northern faces of the Mettenberg, Wetterhorn and Wellhorn. Whereas it could be excavated in Grindelwald in a quarry, the marble on the northern side of the Grosse Scheidegg was hardly accessible. Here they were therefore depending on dropped blocks. The Rosenlaui marble was highly appreciated in the 18th century due to its intense red-violet nuances and therefore exported as far as Portugal. In the renowned manufactory of the Brothers Funk in Bern they produced mantelpieces, tombs, altars and coverings for commodes. Workpieces made of Rosenlaui marble, can be seen, among other places, in the church in Hindelbank, in the Jegenstorf and Oberhofen castles.
