Mid-19th century at the time of the first tourists, there were no high-tech clothing for glacier and mountain tours. The tourists with their guides took the dangerous routes over the glacier and up to the mountains in the Aletsch region with their hobnailed leather shoes. As these nails, functioning as spikes, had to be renewed regularly, the local shoemaker at the Aletschbord made certainly a good deal.
