The village Bellwald consists of the typical home farms of mountain farmers, storehouses, stable barns and hay barns. These are situated very close to each other, which is characteristic for the clustered settlements in the Valais, whereas the church is mostly the center of the village. The majority of the historic building stock is assembled with squared timber beams. This represents, together with the high rectangular walls, a typical feature of Valais block construction. Often moderate wall decoration in the form of carvings can be observed, indicating a high degree of craftsmanship professionalism. The Foundation «Altes Bellwald» was founded in order to protect the beautiful village image of Bellwald and to prevent the decline of these unique buildings.
