Viewpoint: The alder belt in the glacier forefield of the Upper Grindelwald glacier
From the exit of the tunnel at the chalet Milchenbach you have a wonderful view of the glacier forefield. A belt of bright green alders stands next to the bed of the glacier brook contrasting the dark spruce forest behind. Alders belong to the pioneer plants that repopulate the barren gravel area after the retreat of the glacier and prepare the ground for more demanding species. After a tremendous avalanche in 2012 a large part of the alders were folded like matches.
