Avalanche Protection in Rock and Stone

Especially in wild valleys such as the Lötschental, residents had to construct agricultural buildings in areas exposed to avalanches. The stable barn in the catchment area of the «Gerynloibina» (Geryn avalanche) was therefore built behind a boulder, which was additionally walled in. In the case of an avalanche the massive rear wall serves as a wedge dividing the avalanche. In this way it flows past on the left and the right side of the building without causing any significant damage.
