The picture shrine in the hamlet Eisten near Blatten is one of numerous religious buildings (shrines, crosses, chapels and churches) along the path through the valley Lötschental. Shrines were donated by families, contrary to the chapels and churches which are constructed by the parish. They are signs of a deep-rooted religiosity and highlight particular places in the landscape, represent the fulfilment of vows or are simply an expression of faith. Shrines of saints were always a sign of piety and places of contemplation. This is still testified by deposited flowers or burning candles.
